not so special

in the culture we are in nothing seems more valued then individuality constant new products and marketing stargerys trying to reach the individual in every one. this idea that we are away from the whole creates a wonderful field of selling new products that show the individually in us all. such as custom clothing, ipod, computers, tattoos are all ways to some how reach to that part of us that wants to be the only one. it is hard for reading this lecture and not saying i heard this before ? or what is he going to get at and sell me some thing all ready. i feel that this is getting at the idea we are all special is not new nor is it well thought out. for example kids in grade school are singing songs about how sepical they are to raise there selfastem such as songs like the star song , where like much of Banach is saying we are all free indivuals and never know whos feeling what and we are free as our selves by our selves. any way i hope this works if it doesnt ill put the link.

so i think it works any way i feel this si a good picture of what Banach is saying.this sad existence where we are "alone" and "never really know any one then our selves"is like stars ofthen so far from one another and i think this matchs this song. so why is this bad that we are all stars floating is black dark cold space never knowing the star 4 light years away. well one you are more maketable and become part of a whole. so it is self defeating in that point but lets say that OK you can be bought out easier you got moneys to spend. well you see only your self and that's will make you More likely to be a narrist and an ass hole. only getting happiness from things you get or when people you don't know priase you since you will get to the point more often then not that the only thing that can be important is you light years from any one what can you do right? this is a sad dumb existence to assume your differnt from all the people 7 billion of them now so and you share 99.8 dna with them?again i feel that this is a great marketing idea and will make money because American are drowned in the idea we are all differnt. amerca has the highist narriastic rate than any other country ( i smell a conection!) this moral frame work is really screwing thigns up people feel like they deserver more for less , that they are the stars are extremely competitive for redicuals things ( a dad beat another man to death at a hockey pact ice for some dispute over the children playing i shit you not.) also some blame this moral rame work even on the the recession say that naricaisim creates people who take higher risks who are willing to lend money they cant give out or loan money ( is that right? )when they can probably never pay it back in there life times. i feel this lecture is a trap or part of one where people feel free of this super conforing culture just to be up graded to another one. like now instead of school you got work! all is an enslavement the differnce is who is enslaveing who in Banach's way it is your self.

  1. I LOVE how you were able to connect the "need" for individuality to marketing and "costuming". This will relate to what we're going to learn in history this year. It's also great that you put a video in your post. Very thoughtful. Love you.

  2. Ok I'm gonna leave a "ABCDEF" comment now.

I admire your approach to this topic, you aren't scolding or condescending but you make a valid and effective point. I also agree that a life without REAL empathy is just plain "sad" -- I couldn't have spent an hour in a thesaurus and found a better adjective. I find that the existentialist guide to life is a tricky one: "treat others the way you want to be treated but uh -- we can never truly relate to one another so it's not like compassion can cause you to be considerate and altruistic so uh just do it anyway".

If we can't relate to anybody else then what's the point to treat eachother with kindness? What DRIVES us to come to the conclusion that we must abide the "golden rule"? Whether or not the existentialist wants to admit it -- we can and DO empathize with the people around us, it's how we make decisions and discern what is appropriate/advantageous.

What I agree with the MOST, thought, is your concern that existentialism can foster a sense of supreme and narcissistic individuality. This kind of self destructive philosophy is what has kept capitalism and exploitation afloat for so long. Most of the world is under the hypnosis that we are all unique islands and that we all "shine like stars", when in reality, all humans are 99% genetically similar and we're more homogenous than we realize.

Why are people so afraid of admitting they are the same and that they share the same goals, the same flesh, the same feelings? It's because CAPITALISM has made this paradigm essential, if not integral to our SURVIVAL. In order to be successful, live the longest and have the highest chance of procreating in a capitalist society, we must adopt the idea that we unique and bestowed with a talent that nobody else could possibly have. It's how we MARKET ourselves to the Man and to each other. My concern with existentialism is that it commodifies our identity. There are close to 7 billion people in this world -- we don't ALL have a snowflake-like niche, unique and distinguishable from every other living human on the planet. We need to shift away from the pride in individuality, as Andy said last year, "THERE IS NO INDIVIDUAL SALVATION".

We must abolish the ideas which keep humans from uniting and relating to each other. Existentialism may seem harmless, but I think it is dangerous and doesn't encourage the moral responsibility it touts. Existentialism has the opposite of it's intended effect.

Let's talk more about this. Love you!
